Russ (real name Russell James Vitale) was born in New Jersey on September 26, 1992. As a child, his life was never stable. His family moved repeatedly due to his father’s work, and after moving around North Carolina and Kentucky, he finally settled in Atlanta, Georgia, in his late teens. In this unstable environment, Russ was greatly supported by the classical guitar that his grandfather “Pop” taught him.
In his lyrics and in interviews, he broaches the stresses in his family and his responsibility to his mother in his songs and interviews.
His mother’s mental illness and his past support of his siblings. After overcoming alcohol addiction, he shared in interviews that therapy helped him balance his mind and body, using activities like basketball to strengthen his mental health.
